Promotion of Art and Culture in Africa and Europe
Sixty museum directors from 38 African and European countries created, during a forum held from April 25 to 27 in Dakar, a network of exchange and collaboration, to develop sustainable links and joint exhibitions, they said in a statement released Friday, April 28.
Indeed, this event is very important for the promotion of art and culture in Africa and Europe.
Creation of a Network – African art to a broader audience
Dakar Press Conference
At a press conference in Dakar where the scheme was unveiled, Hamady Bocoum, head of Senegal’s Museum of Black Civilisations, said the initiative would bring African art to a broader audience.
The creation of this network of exchange and collaboration between African and European museum directors is a commendable initiative that will strengthen the ties between the two continents.
This network will promote cooperation between museums, allowing exchanges of exhibitions and collections, as well as training and joint research programs. Members of the network will also be able to share ideas and innovative practices in collections management and conservation.
The purpeous is the valorization of African cultural heritage
In addition, this network will contribute to the valorization of African cultural heritage in Europe and the rest of the world, while allowing African museums to benefit from the expertise and experience of European museums in the conservation and development of collections.
This is excellent news for the world of art and culture, as it will strengthen the ties between peoples and promote mutual understanding through art and culture.
Raising Funds
The museums will approach governments and donors for funding to give the scheme a long-term future.
Initial responses from French and German agencies who attended the Dakar meeting were encouraging.
Three major themes: Collections, Exhibitions and Capacity Building
Three major themes were discussed during this meeting to shape the future of museums: collections, exhibitions and capacity building.
The members of the new network are committed, among other things, to « pooling » their efforts « to document, preserve and reinterpret collections in Africa and Europe.
Collections, exhibitions and capacity building
« The members of the new network consider that the development of joint traveling exhibitions, with multiple partners, circulating in Africa and Europe is an instrument for transforming the narratives that build our vision of the world, » the members said at the close of the first edition of the international forum of African and European museum directors.
Building a Common Future in a Perspective of dialogue of cultures
« … They affirm that their ambition is to build together a common future in a perspective of dialogue of cultures of which Leopold Sedar Senghor was one of the greatest champions, » they said in the declaration.
Promoting Peace and Mutual Understanding
« Convinced that museums have a major role to play in promoting peace and mutual understanding, they take up the challenge together to build and strengthen their partnerships in order to respond to contemporary issues and pass on to future generations a spirit of mutual trust and respect, » they add.
