Guillaume Larquemain dreams big
Guillaume Larquemain dreams big
Guillaume Larquemain dreams big. In the world of fashion, originality and creativity are essential qualities to stand out, and Guillaume Larquemain perfectly embodies these values.
Trained as a designer and a graduate of the Ecole Boulle in Paris—one of the largest art and design establishments in Europe—he launched his eponymous brand in 2022.
His multifaceted roles as an artistic director and scenographer have earned him an entrepreneurial career where each step is an ode to innovation and French know-how.
The French flagship of foresight
Guillaume Larquemain didn’t follow the traditional fashion path.
With a pronounced taste for luxury, which he describes as ‘the French flagship of foresight and reflection on new ideas and developments in society,’ he has always harbored an ardent passion for creation and innovation.
His journey led him to explore new avenues and push the boundaries of accessory design. Inspired by French designer Philippe Starck, who created furniture in apple canvas for the Cassina brand, Guillaume Larquemain had an idea:
‘If we can sit on apple canvas and it resists friction, we should be able to use it for another everyday fashion accessory—such as bags.’”
Handcrafted in France sourced from bio-materials
Guillaume Larquemain
Imagine someone with the ambition to create a unique product without resorting to far-fetched resources like those from the moon or the seabed.
In 2021, this individual embarked on a project to design timeless fashion accessories using an intriguing material: apple canvas.
This material, patented by an Italian brand seven years ago and recognized across Europe, is sourced from bio-materials. While the young designer didn’t invent the material, they reimagined it.
Their motivation? To utilize a resource readily available all over the planet and shift our perspective.
Rather than burying or incinerating the material, they chose to repurpose it.
The process of making “apple leather”
The process of making “apple leather” involves reusing apple cores and peels, which are byproducts of the apple juice industry.
These elements are transformed into a paste and then mixed with organic solvents and polyurethane to achieve a texture similar to animal leather.
Luxury brands
Luxury brands like Sylven New York, Samara, and Good Guys Don’t Wear Leather have embraced this plant-based material for their new collections.
Compared to synthetic leather, which is 100% polyurethane and harmful to the environment, apple leather requires only 40-50% plastic and even reduces greenhouse gas emissions by repurposing food waste.
Luxurious and eco-friendly
Luxurious and eco-friendly, apple leather is gaining popularity among designers and consumers who want to avoid animal exploitation.
However, sourcing apple byproducts and manufacturing luxury products from alternative leathers remain significant challenges.
Importing raw materials from Europe, where food waste recycling infrastructure is better suited, proves complex.
Additionally, limited production cycles and dyeing options pose further obstacles.
For apple leather to truly take off, better communication between the food and fashion industries is essential.
Guillaume Larquemain aimed to create custom decorations
But what sets Guillaume Larquemain apart is his approach to design.
He aimed to create custom decorations.
To achieve this, he photographed imperfections on a real apple, digitized them, and then reproduced them on the material.
The result? A unique texture that defies expectations, distinct from existing materials like leather. »
