International Djembe Festival: Guinea aims to regain its place on the world percussion scene

Guinea is preparing to host the Festival du Djembé, a significant cultural event aiming to re-establish its presence on the global cultural stage.
This festival will highlight the country’s rich drumming traditions, specifically the djembe, a drum deeply rooted in West African heritage and culture.

The Festival International du Djembé (FID-Guinée) will take place from December 4th to 8th, 2024 in Conakry

This event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Handicrafts in collaboration with the Centre International de Percussions de Guinée and Nuits Métis, aims to celebrate and preserve the rich tradition of percussion in Guinée.

Thema Preservation and Innovation

The theme for this year’s festival is « Preservation and Innovation, » focusing on both honoring traditional percussion instruments and exploring new creative expressions. The festival will feature performances, workshops, and exchanges between local and international percussionists, making it a vibrant cultural gathering.

Director General of the International Percussion Center, Abou Soumah

The Director General of the International Percussion Center (CIP) in Guinea is Abou Soumah. He has been instrumental in revitalizing the center under the leadership of the transitional government.

Since assuming his role in May 2022, he has focused on promoting Guinea’s rich cultural heritage, particularly percussion instruments and traditional dances.

His efforts include developing a five-year strategic plan, advocating for laws to regulate the import and export of musical instruments, and enhancing the financial sustainability of the center.

Abou Soumah‘s leadership is complemented by his Deputy Director, Abdoulaye Aissata Bangoura.

Together, they aim to position the CIP as a hub for cultural innovation and education, including initiatives like introducing percussion education in private schools.

Despite facing financial constraints, the center continues to advance Guinea’s cultural prominence nationally and internationally

Primary goal is to « highlight our cultural heritage, especially percussion instruments

According to the Director General of the International Percussion Center, the festival’s primary goal is to « highlight our cultural heritage, especially percussion instruments, and ensure that this rich legacy gains greater recognition both nationally and internationally. »

The djembe is celebrated for its versatility and importance in ceremonies, storytelling, and community bonding.
It has historically been used in Guinée to unite people during social events and cultural rituals, symbolizing the nation’s vibrant traditions.

The festival is expected to feature master drummers, cultural performances, and workshops that showcase the drum’s historical and modern applications.
Such events not only preserve the art of drumming but also promote cross-cultural understanding, emphasizing the global appeal of Guinean traditions

This initiative reinforces Guinea’s commitment to celebrating and sharing its heritage, fostering both local pride and international recognition.

The finalists of Miss Guinea 2024

The finalists of Miss Guinea 2024 have expressed their support for the Festival du Djembé and the initiative led by the Minister of Culture.

This initiative seeks to promote traditional Guinean instruments and percussion from around the world, highlighting their cultural significance and artistic value.

By participating in such events, the Miss Guinea contestants play a role in championing Guinea’s rich heritage and encouraging younger generations to appreciate and preserve traditional music and instruments like the djembe. Their involvement also amplifies the festival’s mission to reintegrate Guinea into the international cultural scene while fostering pride in its artistic legacy.

This collaboration aligns with broader efforts to celebrate the diversity of global percussion and spotlight Guinea as a hub for cultural and artistic exchange.

The current Minister of Culture in Guinée is Alpha Soumah, also known as « Bill de Sam, » a prominent figure in the country’s cultural scene.

He has been active in promoting Guinean traditions, arts, and cultural heritage. One of his notable recent initiatives is the revival of traditional instruments like the djembe to emphasize their global significance and reconnect Guinée with its rich cultural roots.

Under his leadership, Guinée is organizing events such as the Festival du Djembé, aiming to position the country as a hub for cultural exchange on the international stage.

Marc Ambrogiani, the artistic director of Nuits Métis

Marc Ambrogiani, the artistic director of Nuits Métis and a partner of FID-Guinée, highlighted the success of the last biennale held two years ago.

He explained that its goal was to reinstate Guinea at the center of world music, particularly in the realms of international percussion and contemporary music.
